How to Use Compost

Compost reduces the need for watering, pesticides, and fertilizers. It is also full of nutrients and acts as a soil amendment! Here are some ideas for using your homemade compost:

  • Lawn: Sprinkle a 1/4” thick layer of compost onto your lawn, and top with water.

  • Garden beds: Add between 2 and 4” of compost on the surface of the soil before planting in the spring. Also add compost in the fall as a top dressing.

  • Potted plants: When repotting plants, mix compost with soil (no more than 1 part compost to 2 parts soil) to make your own potting mix. You can also add about 1/4” of compost to the surface of the soil in potted plants.

  • Trees & shrubs: In spring or early summer, apply a 1-2” layer of compost on the surface of the soil, a few inches from the base of the plant.

  • Mulching: Before adding mulch, sprinkle some compost atop the soil and around the base of plants.
